TK MAXX Find: The £4.99 Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer Shade in 13 Warm – Review

I wasn’t on the look out for a new foundation [ I know…same old lame excuse ] until I saw the Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer marked for £4.99 at TK Maxx [ selling for £29.50 everywhere ] sometime back in February. The low price intrigued me so I dug through the messy pile and reached for shade ‘ 13 Warm’ . This was the only darker shade among the few they had in stock so I figured there’s not much to loose considering the price point even if the shade doesn’t suit my skin tone very well.

This foundation comes with it’s matching a concealer cleverly hidden inside the lid. The shade of the concealer is a shade lighter with a more yellow undertone than the foundation itself. I have been using this as an everyday foundation and mostly wear this for running errands and on casual days when I still want my skin to look like my skin but better.

Here’s a description of the foundation according to Stila.

This is an oil-free, high definition, high performance foundation that stays all day and delivers a flawless finish. The unique oxygen technology leaves skin hydrated, nourished and helps prevent premature ageing.

The consistency of this foundation is very sheer to medium in coverage but can be buildable too to your own preference. I prefer mine to the coverage of a tinted moisturiser. The texture is quite thick, creamy/emollient type of consistency and won’t spill from the bottle easily even when  knocked over. This doesn’t dry to a matte finish. I always need to powder up or blot away the excess product after each application as it leaves a dewy finish especially after building up the dark spots on my cheeks. However, I do like that it still feels skin-like and not cakey no matter how much I build it up and a bit of skin texture and imperfections showing through. This is for casual days when I’m not too concerned about full coverage. The shade is close to my skin tone, probably one shade lighter than my usual foundations but since I go for a lighter coverage, it works well and warms up and blends into my skin after sometime. Powder  is definitely required to mattify and remove any excess  shine, remember, this foundation is emollient based so it leaves a sheen finish after application. You’ll need to carry the powder with you for blotting during the day too. Those with oily/combo skin will not love this foundation but it will do wonders for those with normal to dry skin.

Due to the thickness of the foundation, it comes with a spatula to scoop out the product which I find strange [ and have never seen before ] but it totally makes sense too. It just wouldn’t work with a pump and hitting the back of your hand to pour it out everyday will certainly hurt too. I find the texture to be very soft and easily bendable with a dampen beauty blender. There’s a mini flat brush that came with the packaging but I haven’t really paid attention to that. A makeup sponge performs much better and blends beautifully into the skin compare to a brush. This is just my opinion. This super creamy texture is not ideal for my oily skin and I get too oily very quickly with this foundation. I’m thinking of skipping my moisturiser whenever I wear this.  I think this type of foundation might be suitable for those with extremely dry skin as you get the benefit of a built-in moisturiser.

The concealer is much thicker and feels heavier and creamier too. It does go on smoothly but the shade is much lighter on me and the yellow undertone can be seen even after setting it with a translucent powder [ see face swatch below ]. It doesn’t dry to a matte finish so setting or baking is non negotiable with this concealer on. The skin around my eye area is very drying and I was hoping this concealer will help with the dryness a bit but instead I was left disappointed. It didn’t stay put, creased and moved around and also required frequent touch-ups. This won’t be an issue for some since the container is portable and comes in a purse friendly packaging and a mirror too but I’m not about that life so I’ve given up on this concealer and stuck to my NYX HD concealer like glue. I can deal with the yellow undertone which shows this is not the shade for my under eyes but might be great for highlighting. I’m just not a fan of the texture and the formula at all so this concealer gets a no from me.

The face swatch shows the foundation and concealer worn for more than 8 hours. Blotting powder was applied just before this shot was taken to remove excess shine. In terms of it claiming to be an all day and long wearing, I didn’t find this to be true. I get oily after a couple of hours of wear. I wouldn’t rely on this foundation to see me through events and long days. From the swatch above you can see some blemishes and discolourations on my cheeks where the foundation had faded and moved around. Its worth noting that it doesn’t settle into fine lines or clings to dry patches which is a good thing.

Overall, I’m happy to add this great find to my collection and reserved it for casual days and no makeup make-up days. It hasn’t got the staying power it claims to perform [ maybe I got one from the ‘bad batch’ pile, who knows? ] but I do like the light coverage and the skin-like formula. Did I mention it has anti-ageing properties too?  The cleverly hidden concealer is a great addition but it’s a real shame we didn’t get along at all.

PS: TK Maxx is not my usual place to shop for foundations but it’s a worth checking their beauty pile every now and then. I once saw a NARS Sheer Glow foundation selling for £16 but it was too dark for me. I’m aware TK Maxx sometimes gets the overstock and some sample items from brands hence the low prices. I made sure to give this bottle of foundation a thorough check before bringing it home with me. I checked to ensure it wasn’t tampered with, the concealer hidden in the lid had not been touched and also gave the foundation a quick sniff for any foul scent but everything seemed legit.

I like the foundation but I’m not sure if I’d pay the full price for it but I’m glad I got to try it at this low price.

Verse of The Day:-

20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
